Album Review: New Kids On The Block's"10"

As the music video for their new single 'Remix (I Like The)' shows, New Kids On The Block still own a brilliant sense of humour. What's more, while the clip - which sees an initially shy fan played by It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia actress Artemis Pebdani strutting her stuff at a pool party - is a knowingly self-aware nod to them and their fans entering their mature years, the song itself is a ...
perky and surprisingly modern-sounding slice of dance-pop. But after 15 years as a band, are NKOTB really trying to win new fans?
Unfortunately, it's an exception to the rule for the most part on Ten, which marks their eighth studio album and follows 2011's joint hits compilation with The Backstreet Boys. Opener 'We Own The Night' - a lighter-waving ballad complete with fist-clenching chorus - is a better indication of what to expect, while the brief uptempo moments on 'The Whisper' and David Guetta-esque 'Crash', despite their slick production, feel more cringe than cute from a group now in their 40s. That said, hardened fans will no doubt enjoy it, and we're almost certain their intentions were no different.
